Make a constellation projector - page 2

In this part of the tutorial we make the projector. Note that I make this project using foam board. You can buy foamboard at Walmart for 88 cents a sheet. Or, you can simply make this project using cardboard. Everything is exactly the same.

Print out the template and cut out the seven pieces that make up the projector box.

Note: You print this project on normal printer paper. But... if you have a thicker paper like card stock then print it up on that. This will save you time and work because that card stock is a good thickness for the constellation cards. You won't need to transfer the constellation pattern to card stock. You can just cut them out and use them as is.

Place those template pieces on foamboard or cardboard and trace them. Note: Trace the piece labeled "side piece" twice. We need two of them. So, you have seven template papers and you end up with eight pieces.

And note that the pieces labeled "top" and "bottom" are very similar in appearance and size. But they are different. You can assemble them into the box incorrectly. So label these pieces on the foamboard so you know which is which.

Go ahead and cut those pieces out of the foamboard.

Let's put it together

Glue the bottom piece to both side pieces just like this. That bottom piece is glued just above the feet on the side pieces. The next picture shows you the location of where to glue the bottom piece to the side pieces - right within that dashed line.

Special Note: Just be sure to use the piece labeled "bottom". It is easy to confuse this piece with the piece labeled "top" because they are similar in size and shape. But they are a bit different.

You can use any type of glue that is suitable for paper. The foamboard is two layers of paper sandwiching foam. Regular white glue works quite well. But the fastest and easiest way to do it is with a hot glue gun.

Next glue the long skinny shelf piece onto the front piece. The template has dashed lines showing you where to glue it.

Then glue that front piece onto the projector.

And glue the back onto the projector

Line the projector with aluminum foil. Do the sides, the bottom and the top. No need to do the front and back of the projector.

You are almost done. Let's continue on
