Classical Guitar FAQ

Here are answers to some of the more common questions about the Classical Guitar.

  • Is the classical guitar different than other guitars like folk guitars? Great question and yes, there are some fundamental differences. It is built differently, has a different shape, uses nylon strings and the freboard is typically wider than regular folk style guitars.
  • Is classical guitar more difficult than other guitars to play. In a nutshell yes. It is more complicated and focuses on more left hand finger motions. Classical guitar does both rhythm guitar work and lead guitar work for melodies.
  • When did the classical guitar start? - It has evolved over the centuries and first started making appearances in the 15th century but it was pretty much set into its modern form with nylon strings in 1947. This was all set by the master Andre Segovia. I have an article on the history of the classical guitar right here.
  • Is a classical guitar expensive? Yes and no. You can get a good quality classical guitar for a couple of hundred dollars. The high end ones can run into the thousands however.
