Selous Scouts on the Hunt (A Historical Diorama)

Here is another historical diorama. This is my second African Wars diorama, this is based on the famous Selous Scout that were formed up during the Rhodesian War 1964 - 1979.

Luis has made a whole lot of dioramas in a variety of genres including military and fantasy. You can check them out here: Dioramas by Luis

The Selous Scouts Diorama

This is my second African Wars diorama (A Walk in the Park ). It is based on the famous Selous Scout that were formed up during the Rhodesian War 1964 - 1979.

The Selous Scouts was a special forces regiment of the Rhodesian Army that operated from 1973 until the reconstitution of the country as Zimbabwe in 1980. Named after the British explorer Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917) The charter of the Selous Scouts directed them to "the clandestine elimination of terrorists/terrorism both within and without the country."

In 1980 the highly successful unit was disbanded due to military rivalry within the army and were used as political scapegoats in the type of murderous tactics they used to be successful, as well as supposedly being involved in black marketeering of African Wildlife.

On Point

The figures are from 28mm Eureka Miniatures -Selous Scout and a ZANLA soldier. The Soldiers are painted in their actual camouflage pattern that the Rhodesian Army used back then. While the former ZANLA soldier (the one on point)(the Selous Scouts recruited a number of former rebels that became disillusioned with the Communist cause) uses the Cuban camo pattern.

About the Savanna and the vegetation in the diorama

Compared to the first African diorama "A Walk in the Park" this was one was easy, for the vegetation is less because it takes place in a savanna and not in a jungle forest. Trees are handmade from wires, the leaves are from Italian herbs, rocks are from the back yard, bushes are moss from a hobby store, and small flowers are weeds I picked up in the yard and then dried them out.

Closeup of the terrain and the figures

The ground work came from Reality in Scale, which was painted over with water-based paint for the ground work was too shiny.

The background scenery is a picture I printed out from the internet of a savanna.

The base of the diorama is a basic plaque from Hobby Lobby.

UDT Boat Frogmen Diorama

UDT Boat Frogmen Diorama

Before they were Navy Seals they were called Frogmen. A web visitor (Luis) has created an amazing diorama with incredible detail. He tells us how he made it, how he achieved the water effects and more. (And we have lots of pics) Check it out here: The UDT Boat Frogmen Diorama
