How to Make a PVC sword Part 4: Painting and handle details

In this part of the tutorial we paint the sword and add the handle detail work - finishing it off! Yay!

Part 1 of this tutorial is here

PAINTING PVC PIPE

We are going to paint the sword. But first let's talk a little bit about paint! We ran a series of tests to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Different painting options

Option 1 (Best Option): The Best Paint for PVC Is Krylon Fusion Spray Paint. It is specifically made for plastics. It goes on well and it dries very nicely.

Option 2: (Good Option) Three Layers. First prime the pvc with a coat of mod podge. Let it dry for a couple of hours. The paint it with brush on acrylic paint and let it dry over night. Then finish it off with another coat of mod podge. This works well and creates a durable paint job.

Option 3: Not as good - A lot of people talk about sanding the pvc before painting it. We tried sanding then painting with both spray on paint and brush on acrylic. They both work and eventually dry. But are sensitive to scratches and wear.

Paint the blade silver

Paint the blade silver.

Once the paint has dried you can remove the newspaper masking and mask off the blade. Then paint the rest of the sword black.

Paint the handle black

The painting is done and it looks good. Remove the remaining masking once it has dried and we can move on .

Wrap the handle

Let's add some nice detail to the handle. We cut a thin piece of leather to size and wrapped it around the handle. And hot glued it in place. We are using black leather. You can also use cloth. Or, if you don't have anything suitable you can leave the handle black or have some fun with it. Decorate it any way you want.

WRap the handle with cord

Then we wrapped it with a spiral of leather lace. Looks good. Glue it at regular intervals so it doesn't slip in your hand.

Wrap more cord

And a nice crossing of leather here on the guard looks really good.

Add some details

Now have some fun adding any details that you want. We painted a gold crown on it.

That's It! Your PVC Sword is done.
