Make a Miniature Glass Shield from Skyrim - Part 2

 

In this part of the tutorial we finish off the making of the miniature glass shield from skyrim.

Using a belt sander

This picture shows me smoothing out the edges with a one inch belt sander. It really works very well on this epoxy resin. Just go slow because if it heats up too much it tends to melt. The point here is that the stuff is very workable and you have a wide variety of choices when it comes to tools.

 

Draw the ornament on paper

Now let's make the ornamental work that goes onto the shield. I traced our green shield onto paper to get the outside dimensions. Then I drew the ornament onto that.

 

Cut out that shape. And cut the inner circles out too. Not shown here.

 

The ornament

So, this is what it will look like. Now we just need to make the actual ornament.

 

Trace onto craft foam

Trace that template onto craft foam and cut it out.

 

Glue onto shield

There you go. It looks good. Make any trims necessary then glue it onto the shield.

One of the great things about this craft foam is that you can impress lines and patterns on it with a ball point pen. It keeps a nice indented shape. So, go ahead and add some ornamental work to it.

 

Paint it gold

Let's paint it! Some gold paint is perfect for this.

 

Green sections

And some of the sections can be painted green. It looks really good with the two bigger segments green like you see I am doing here.

Making the handle

This is optional but I needed handles on the back of the shield so I could use it in the animation. So I made two handle straps like this out of craft foam.

 

Attach handles

A little hot glue is all you need to attach those handles to the back of the shield. And Voila! You are done!!!!
