Make Voldo's Katars Part 3

This is part 3 of the tutorial on how to make Voldo's Katars. In this part we work on the detail of the shields.

Part 1 is here

The tape balls

It's time to add décor to the faceplates. To start, roll up four balls of masking tape, roughly big enough to fit in the circles in the top center of the faceplate. When you have balls about the right size, glue them in place with the hot glue gun.

The wire

The next materials you'll need are the telephone wire and X-acto knife. Telephone wire is a type of wire that usually has a beige or white outer coating of thin plastic with multicolored wires inside. You can remove the internal wires simply by cutting the coating open and pulling them out by hand or with a pair of pliers. This is only a matter of preference. If you feel you can manipulate the shape of the telephone wire easily without removing these, then you don't need to. In the tutorial video, I'm using hollow plastic wire coating.

Wiring it

These next few steps have no precise length of wire. You need as much as it will take to line the outer edge of both faceplates and the eye in the center of the faceplates as well. Eye it out and glue the telephone wire around the entire perimeter of each faceplate.

ITs all wired

Do the same for the eye. This process takes a little time but is extremely simple. The little "wings" on the left and right of each eye will also need a tiny piece of wire. See the video for detailed demonstration.

Trace the pupil

To create the pupil in the eye, take your tracing paper with the faceplate design on it, and simply trace that circle right onto foam. You'll need to do this twice.

Cut the circle for the eye

Then, using a hot wire cutter, cut the circles out. If you're using the same kind of pink foamular I did, it's going to be too thick, so slice those circles in half and get ready to smooth them out.

Taking a very fine grit sandpaper, smooth out the circles- go around the edges but also on the flat sides because they should sit flat on the foam board when you're done.

Glue the pupil in place

When you're content with their shape, glue them down right over the large circle in the center of the eye.

It's finally time to paint!
