The Avenue of the Giants

The Avenue of the Giants is a 31 mile stretch of scenic drive in northern california about 100 miles from the Oregon border. It is a country road, not a highway, and it parallels Route 101.

I have some thoughts and some pictures for you.

The thing about it is that it is a special drive. Don't think of driving on a highway or in a city. It is a quiet, intimate (and dark) drive through a forest!!!

And I mean dark. That's because you are passing through a forest of ancient redwoods! So, there is a wonderful feeling of calm and peace here.

Spending some time on the Avenue of the Giants was an easy decision for me because on my journey along the coast of california a was already driving Route 101. So, it isn't reallly a detour. You just drive the avenue and it parallels 101 and you get right back on. I spent one whole day exploring this.

Along the route there are lots of different things to see including the tree you drive through, the Dyerville Giant which is a felled tree, the Giant tree, the Founders Grove, and more. Here are some pictures I took.

This picture with my car gives you a sense for the size of some of these trees.

The Founders Tree
