It's a beautiful museum in the heart of Providence and it should be on everybody's museum list. I spent a day walking around this beautiful old New England city that is loaded with Universities and this gem of a museum. The RISD school was established in 1877 and the museum opened it's first public galleries in 1893, |
The museum cares for more than 100,000 objects spanning from the ancient world to today and from all over the world. Some of their major sections include: European Art before 1900, Ancient Greek and Roman Decorative Art, American Art before 1900 and New Media.
And much to my surprise I discovered that they have a beautiful late era Van Gogh -with a bit of a story. They had this work in their museum for many years but couldn't claim it as an authentic Van Gogh partially because it is unsigned. But recently they had an expert examine it and it has been certified as an authentic Van Gogh.
They also have a Picasso from his cubist period. (Seated Woman with a Book)
This next one definitely made an impression; because of the lighting. It is "The Resurrection of Christ" by Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp -1640
This is an emblem book, a literary genre popular in Europe A Cezanne: On the Banks of a River, 1904-1905
A Matisse - The Green Pumpkin 1915 A Monet- The Basin at Argenteuil, 1874
I was also surprised to see a Chihuly Chandelier - Gilded Frost and Jet Chandelier 2008 But upon reading the placard about this chandelier I discovered that Chihuly was actually a graduate of RISD.
