Shoebox Diorama Fun

I show you how to make all kinds of fun shoebox dioramas. And I give you a bunch of material you can print up to make your own!

A shoebox diorama is a miniature scene inside some kind of box. This typically is a shoebox but it can be any kind of small box. Typically it is around a foot in size. No pun on shoebox and foot intended!

Will has a youtube channel with over 700 videos on projects you can make. Check it out right here - I also have a whole lot of diorama making vidoes in my playlist here: Diorama Making Videos

You don't have to use a shoebox for your shoebox diorama. You can use some other kind of box. Or you can even make your own box. Typically you can make it around the size of a toaster. You can vary this depending on what kind of scene you want to put into it. Here is a space them diorama that I made and I give you all the items so you can make your own.

The shoebox diorama

One of the nicest things about something like this is that it takes up three dimensional space. There is depth to it. Everything isn't flat on the back of the box. The space ship and the astronaut look like they are floating in space.

If you don't already have a box or shoebox here is a diagram showing you how to make one! You just need five pieces of cardboard or foamboard.

The pieces

If you want to make your own shoebox you measure and cut five pieces of cardboard or foamboard. The picture above shows the dimensions. Make two pieces that are six inches by six inches. And make three pieces that are six inches by twelve inches.

Then glue or tape the pieces together to make a box like this.

Assemble it It is assembled

I also used black foam board to make one. This is going to be perfect for a space diorama. Maybe you are making an underwater or ocean diorama. Blue would be perfect. And you can always cover the inside with construction paper or paint.

The box is black

If you don't have an idea yet for what you want your diorama to be here are some ideas for you:

  • An ocean scene
  • A space scene
  • A scene of your bedroom
  • Or another room in your house
  • Your neighborhood
  • A baseball park or a football stadium
  • A nature scene
  • A rainforest
  • A farm
  • A science diorama, of madame curie, albert Einstein, Newton and the apple, or others!
  • A diorama of a season like Winter, Spring Summer or Fall
  • Native American Diorama
  • A desert
  • A castle scene

Will

You know Will wants to make a diorama castle scene! After all this website is called StormTheCastle.com!!!

  • Any scene that you can think of that might be interesting! The important thing is that it be a scene with various elements. If you are doing this for a specific subject in school then you can make something applicable to that subject. Grab your book and look through it.
