How to make a Video Game - The tutorial Part 1
Okay so you want to make your own video game. You have creative ideas just bursting from your ears and you have got to make these ideas reality. Well I have got two things to say about that. The first thing is that it is totally possible! Yes I said it is totally possible. There are lots of good books out there that will help you make your own game and there are a few great software programs that will make your dream a reality. Okay, now that I have said that let me get to the second point. It takes a lot of work. You have to be dedicated and willing to learn, because if you want to make a decent video game there is, even with all the help in books and software, still a lot of things to learn and do.
You have to improve your programming-like skills, your art skills and your creative skills. You have to learn how to design rooms, worlds, characters and textures. And you also have to learn how to design stories. So if I haven't scared you off with all of this then I urge you to press on. Don't let the fire die. Keep driving after your dream and it will become a reality.

The Game Maker's Apprentice: Game Development for Beginners
Well written and easy to understand book that uses the Game Factory in learning how to make video games. Easily understandable for Middle School students and older. Makes 2D, side-scrolling, overhead cam and creative style games. Good introduction to the logic of video game making. They also have a nice website to learn more.
If you are looking for a great book to get you started you should try Awesome Game Creation No Programming Required: Product Page at Amazon. It is a great starting point if you do not have any programming experience. I have this book and it is a great first book for understanding and making easy videogames of the 2d type.
