How to Make a Leather Sword Sheath - Part 6: Ornament and detail on the sheath

In this part of the tutorial we do the detail work on the sheath. You can do lots of different things and can get creative with this. I just show you a couple of ideas.

Part 1 (the beginning) of this tutorial is here

Draw the patterns

Our sword sheath is a replica of sorts of Sting from Lord of the Rings so there are some specific patterns we are following. To start out we drew the patterns on the leather with a pencil. You can do this too if it will help you in the decorating of the sheath.

Hot glue

Then we used a hot glue gun to outline all the patterns. This gives it a nice distinct bas relief look.

Painted silver

Then we painted it silver, including the hot glue lines. It looks great!

Apply foil tape

We did the top section of the sheath with foil tape which is a nice alternative to paint. You cut it to size and shape, peel the adhesive backing and stick it to the leather.

And that's it! Your sword sheath is done!! If you make one be sure to send me a picture. I will put it on my website!
