Cardboard standards for size, shape and fluting

This isn't about boxes! This is about the actual corrugated cardboard that they make boxes with. There is a whole science and a nomenclature to the humble sheet of corrugated cardboard.

This isn't about boxes! This is about the actual corrugated cardboard that they make boxes with. There is a whole science and a nomenclature to the humble sheet of corrugated cardboard.

There are a few different standards when it comes to cardboard. It probably doesn't matter for your projects but it is good to know about these differences when selecting cardboard and building projects.

People often don't realize that there is a variety of thickness, height, and flute interval. So, take a look at the cardboard before using it in a project. Some of these variations are stronger than others. And if you are mixing different types of cardboard it could cause inconsistencies.

As a crafter you should just be aware that there are differences!

The fluting comes in different sizes. It can be different heights and it can vary in how many flutes per inch the cardboard has.

When it comes to corrugations there are five standard sizes and many non-standard sizes. The two most common sizes you will see are B and C. Size B is 3.2 mm in height and it has 47 flutes per linear foot. Size C is 4 mm in height and it has 39 flutes per linear foot.

Double wall cardboard

is a very strong variation of cardboard and it is two sheets of corrugated glued together.

Single face corrugated is a sheet of craft paper and the fluted layer without the third layer. It is often used for specialized packing like wrapping around wine bottles.

Kraft Paper

This is what the two outer layers of corrugated is made from. It is very versatile and very strong. It is also inexpensive. You can buy it in rolls of various sizes or you can disassemble cardboard for the kraft paper.
