Mills and Buildings in Fall River Massachusetts

During the late 1800's Fall River was an industrial powerhouse. It supplied textiles to the world.

This boon was due to a few different factors including that city was perched right against a river and very close to the Atlantic Ocean. And... this river had a variety of waterways and waterfalls that powered the variety of fabric mills during that period of time.

Some of these large granite mills still remain. And, many of the beautiful and majestic granite buildings built for other purposes also still remain.
This is some good Old New England stuff.

Let's take a look.

A Red brick building. There are several buildings in the city with this unique curved shaped. THey are referred to as "Flat-Iron" buildings because of their similarity in shape to flat irons from 100 years ago. Some of them are red brick and some are granite.

I think the name of this one is King Philip Mill. It looks like they will be shortly tearing it down.

Fall River has a very large population of Portuguese people. The city has a special relationship with Portugal and the Azores. And it has the sister city of Ponta Delgada. Ponta Delgada has a Gates of the city monument that was built in the 18th century. They built a replica and had it shipped an installed here in Fall River.
