Make the Glowing Sting Sword from Lord of the Rings
|

Here is a glowing sword like the one that Frodo uses in Lord of the Rings. It really glows and I use a glow stick to fill it up. Not a difficult project to do and it is quite unique. Although the glow stick only lasts a certain amount of time then you have to refill it.
The sword in the lord of the rings is called "Sting" and it was first owned by Bilbo Baggins. He gave it to Frodo. The thing about it is that it glows when there are goblins nearby. |

I started the project by drawing out the sword on a large piece of posterboard. Then I cut it out.
Trace the outline of the template onto the sheet of Polycarbonate plastic. Make two of them.

Cut out the two sword shapes. I used a jigsaw.

Apply a thick bead of crystal clear caulk around the inner edge of one of the sword halves.

It's difficult to see but this picture helps a bit. I just put a thick bead all the way around the edge of the sword half. Right on the top surface not on the side of the plastic.
Apply the second sword piece right on top of the first one. Press it gently into the caulk. You want it to seal but you don't want the two plastic pieces to be flat against each other. We want a space in there.
Now let's make the handle. I started by cutting a couple of pieces out of foamboard and I hot glued them to the sword as shown. This makes up the guard of the handle.
For the rest of the handle including the pommel I just glued on some pieces of foam then carved them with a hot wire foam cutter. You could just easily carve the handle shape.
I wrapped the handle with a couple of different colors of electrical tape. I also painted the guard and pommel with a gray/silver color.
This picture shows that there is a nice empty gap in the middle of the sword. We are going to fill this gap with glowstick fluid.
Drill a hole in the sword near the handle. But only drill through the top layer of plastic. Don't drill the hole all the way through.
I tilted the sword by resting the handle on something then using a straw I slowly inserted the fluid into the sword until it was full. Then I plugged up the hole with some tape.
And there you go! Your sword glows in the dark. There must be a goblin nearby!
