Make the Smaug Catapult - Part 5

In this part of the tutorial we finish off the catapult! Yay!

Part 1 of this tutorial is here

Glue that bow assembly onto the end of the carriage assembly. The end with parts 26-27.

You glue it in place a little low like this. Most of that opening in 27 should be free. This is so the projectile straw will slide freely in and out.

Here you can see how it is glued a little low on the carriage assembly. This allows the straw to smoothly slide in and out.

Now glue that carriage assembly to the stand. Put it about center of mass. But don't push it down too deep on the mount. Insure the popsicle stick slide still can slide back and forth.

Now we need to add the rubber bands.

How you do this will depend on the length and strength of your rubber bands. But you need to run a band from one slot to another on the bow section like you see in the picture here.

I used two rubber bands, cut them in half and knotted them together to make a longer one. Then I put each end in a bow slot, tied a knot and glued it.

But don't glue yours until you have the length and tension that feels pretty good for the catapult.

Now stretch that rubber band over the popsicle stick. No need to glue it to the popsicle stick. Do this same rubber band process on the other side of the catapult and ou are done!

Now you should be able to draw it back evenly and smoothly. Check it for tension. You don't need a lot of tension to fire the bolt a long way! Adjust the length of those rubber bands as needed.

Draw an arrow tip, cut it out and insert it into the end of the straw.

Insert that straw into the catapult and you are ready to fire! That's it, your catapult is done. You are ready to take on Smaug.

You can go ahead and paint it any color you like!

This is a big sword yet pretty strong. I show you a special technique for making a foam board sword that is strong. It involves diamonds but not that kind! Make the Ringwraith sword from LOTR
