The woman as temptress in science fiction movies. The beautful yet evil woman is often times a creation of man himself.
This is an old theme and it goes all the way back to the 1920's Metropolis with the evil robot Maria created by the mad scientist Rotwang - Yup his name is actually Rotwang! Another famous female creation was the Bride of Frankenstein.
This theme of the evil yet very enticing woman was very prevalent in the early years of science fiction movies and it has since fallen to the wayside but it still did make appearances up thorugh the fifties as in this 57 classic The Astounding She Monster.
The Woman as Beautiful and Sexy!
The sixties and seventies saw a dramatic shift in the role of women in science fiction, fantasy and horror movies. She went from something to be feared to something to be admired. She was more of a character on the side of humanity yet overly potent in her sensuality. The movies Barbarella and Galaxina are good examples of this. The Woman as victim
- There is also a long history of women being victims in movies, particularly in horror movies. This category of the genre doesn't begin at any distinct point. It has been a theme that has run through the movies throughout all the decades.
Right from the very beginning of movies the woman as the victim played a major role. This theme was very strong in the horror movies and in particular the vampire movies which always had a very strong sexual undertone.
The contemporary woman in science fiction movies The role of the woman changed in the movies. She slowly started to assert her strengths and become more of the main character and more of the hero.
Linda Hamilton in the Terminator Movies This is where the new role of woman really came to prominence in the science fiction movies. She wasn't evil, she wasn't a victim, and she wasn't terrorized and trying to overcome it. She was a hero. She proactively took the battle to whatever bad forces opposed her.
Sigourney Weaver in The Alien Movies - This is an outstanding example of woman turned warrior and hero in science fiction. Sigourney Weaver prevails after all the men have been killed.
Some more famous Women roles in science fiction movies Woman as alien - This is a theme that has been done many many times but it has always been in the B movie genre. This film takes the theme and turns it into a hollywood A list movie.

Woman as Vampire - Kate Beckinsale Underworld - Evolution (Widescreen Special Edition) Kate Beckinsales plays an extremely sexy and extremely capable vampire in this movie. This role is very much in the vein of Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver with Kate being the sexy kick butt kind of heroine. This makes a nice change from the traditional vampire movie where the woman was always a helpless victim.
