Make a Medieval Tower page 2
The Medieval Village Diorama

This is part of the medieval village diorama tutorial You can go to that main page here

This is part 2 of the medieval tower tutorial. In this part I show you how to make the shingled roof.

The roof

The shingled roof is quite a bit different than the thatched roof on the peasants house. It is also quite a bit easier to make.

You just cut pieces of balsa wood to fit the roof. The sand or file it so all the edges match well.

Getting the shingled look is just a matter of first cutting a series of horizontal lines with a hobby knife or some kind of sharp knife like a razor knife. Then you cut vertical slashes.

Painting the Roof:

How you paint the roof makes a difference and what you do is first paint a base color over the whole roof. I used a gray/silver. Once that paint dries you do a washing technique with black paint. Washing is mixing black paint with water so it is very wet then you brush it on. Because it is very wet it seeps into the cracks and gives a good look. You can dab it all dry with a paper towel.

In this picture you can see how I am starting the black washing technique.
