About Craft foam

Craft foam is an inexpensive and easy to use material for making things. It is kind of like a cloth and kind of like a sponge. It is easy to cut and you can also get some shape with it using a heat gun.

I also have a variety of interesting craft foam projects here you might want to check out including a full set of knight's armor.

Other names for it are Foam Sheets and Foamies. Typically the sheets are about 2mm thick. But you can get it in a wide variety of sizes and thicknesses.

It is often called "craft foam" and sometimes it is called "Foamies". It is inexpensive and very easy to use. And you can work it in a lot of different ways including folding, curving, cutting and even shaping with heat. In this tutorial we don't need to shape it with heat though. It comes in a lot of sizes, colors and thicknesses. So you can probably improvise this project with any number of craft foam varieties. I use sheets of craft foam that are 9 x 12 inches and 2mm thick.

An easy project you can make with craft foam is bracers. These are armor pieces worn on the wrist. I have two different tutorials depending on what kind of bracers you would like to make. The first tutorials is for making the specific bracers that Wonder Woman wears in the movie. And the second tutorial is for making a pair of knights bracers, also called "Vambraces".

Using craft foam is pretty much as easy as this. The picture here shows one of the Wonder Woman bracers. You cut it to shape, paint it, decorate it, and it is ready to use. Just curl it around your forearm and tie it with some string or a shoelace.

Craft foam batman mask

And one of the best things about craft foam is that you can use a heat gun to shape it like you see being done here with the batman mask.

In this video we use craft foam to make the Batman Mask. This video shows you how the craft foam is very workable and shapeable with a heat gun.

Buying Craft Foam

You can buy it at arts and crafts stores like Michaels and AC Moore. You can also buy it online at amazon. I have bought it many many times from amazon.

Foam sheets come in different sizes and they vary quite a bit in price. I have used a whole lot of different types and some are a little bit better than others but not by much so you should do some comparison shopping to get a good price. When buying foam sheets be very conscious of the size of the sheets, the number of sheets you get and the shipping charges!

There are three basic sizes. I have them here for you from smallest to largest. And I have added a sheet of foam roll which is a jumbo 36x60.

It also comes with a sticky back which is a nice option depending on what you are going to use it for.

Generally a hair dryer isn't effective with craft foam. It doesn't get hot enough.. You should use a heat gun. And treat it with safety in mind. It gets hot enough to burn and that metal tip can burn you pretty quickly.
