Book Review

Critical Success: Using RPG Tactics for Project Victory

by Eric Guay

I am currently writing a book inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci. In that book I outline many of the qualities that Da Vinci had that made him the genius that he was. And I show the reader how to capitalize on these traits, using them to increase creativity.

One of the basic tenets of my Da Vinci book is the intersection between the practical world and the world of imagination.

Leonardo was an Engineer. He designed cities, machines, buildings, water managment systems and many things practical real-world devices.

And Leonardo was also deeply involved in the theatre of his time. He designed and built many theatre sets based on flights of imagination!

This combination of the practical and the fantastical is one of the things that made Da Vinci the profound genius that he was.

And this is where the book "Critical Success: Using RPG Tactics for Project Victory" comes into play.

It does this exact thing that Da Vinci did. It takes the experiences and lessons learned from Role Playing games and applies them to the "real world" of project management.

And it does it well. Because after all, whether you are a party of adventurers exploring a dark dungeon or a project manager trying to get a big project done you are still doing the same things -managing resources and people, plotting out a course and achieving goals.

I read the book in a linear fashion from front to back. But it is broken down into a series of small bite size chapters that can be read in any order. Each chapter covering a topic of project managment.

Let me tell you little bit about one of my favorite chapters:

"The Tri-Forge Dilemma: Crafting Excellence on a Goblin's Budget"

Every adventurer knows that you can't have it all when embarking on a campaign. You can't have all the best armor, weapons, and supplies that gold can buy. And as a project manager the same rule applies. You have to make good decisions when it comes the quintessential cost-quality quandary.

So what's a campaign crusader to do? Do you opt for a sword that's cheap and quick to make but might fall apart in the first duel, or do you push for a budget increase to ensure quality, risking the King's wrath? Or perhaps, there's a middle path, one that requires clever negotiation, resourceful thinking, and perhaps a tiny bit of that elusive magic known as "project management."

The book is peppered with insights and includes a dash of humor. It is a fun read that gives great advice. If you are a project manager this is a must have book because of it's unique and interesting perspective on managing projects and people. And if you are also a gamer then you really need to get this book! You will really appreciate the parallels between the gaming world and the "real" world.
