Make a plastic Tank model and diorama -Part 3: The Diorama

Ok! We made the tank and the accessories. That all looks great. Now we want to make a diorama to put it into.

Part 1 of this tutorial is here

I am just doing a quick and easy diorama. You can do the same thing as I have done. Or you can just use my guidelines to make your own unique diorama.

The base

I started with a simple plywood base. This is about 14 inches by 14 inches.

Checking the base size and scale

I looked at it for a while and let some ideas flow.

I placed the pieces on it and moved them around, trying different things.

It seemed like the diorama wouldn't look right if the pieces were in the center. It seemed more interesting with the pieces a little toward one corner.

The shape of it made me thing of a crossroads.

Drawing the roads on the base

There you go! I drew a crossroads on it. It has a nice look to it. Let's go with this.

Let's add some basic ground terrain, some shrubs and a road sign.

Mix water and glue

The first thing we are going to do is affix basic terrain textures to the base of the diorama. We do this with a mixture of white glue and water. Mix about 1/4 cup of white glue and 1/4 cup of water together.

Brush on the glue

Then brush it onto the road sections. We will texture the roads first.

Sprinkle on terrain

And sprinkle terrain texture onto it.

Hold on a sec! Terrain texture? If you are familiar with what that is then great. If not, let me explain.

Woodland scenics terrain

Various companies make a product called terrain textures. This particular one that I use is by Woodland Scenics and it is called Blended Turf Earth Blend. That is the particular color. Blended Turf Bag, Earth/54 cu. in.

But you don't have to buy terrain textures. I have tutorials showing you how to make your own:

Home made terrain textures

How to make your own terrain textures

It is easy to make great terrain for dioramas and wargaming. All you need is foam, a rasp and some paint. I show you how right here. Make terrain textures out of foam
