Bonsai from Trimmings

There are a few different ways to start your bonsai. And just like any other plant you can also start your bonsai from trimmings. Here we lay out the process.

Take cuttings from healthy trees and from as close to the bottom of the tree as possible. (Also, if the tree is on someones property as permission.) Cuttings should have at least six sprouts (leaves) Cut as close to the tree as possible and get into water ASAP too! Remove any small leaves or stems and get the base & wash your cuttings to remove any debris or bugs.

Apply cloning gel

Dip or otherwise cover with a rooting agent. We are using Olivia's cloning gel. Then place in clear glass or cup with clean water and reapply gel every three to four days until the roots start growing.

cutting in water

Once the roots start growing just change the water.

Always be careful and gentle s o as to not damage the new roots. Place near a window where they will get bright but indirect sunlight.

It should take 4-8 weeks for roots to develop. We will get to what happens later in some weeks when our cuttings start rooting.

It can be tricky to keep cuttings like this. Even though they are in water they still can dry out. So we made a little greenhouse to put them in. You can see that project right here: Make a small greenhouse
