The Most valuable US stamp

This is widely considered to be the most valuable US stamp. It is called "The Inverted Jenny" stamp. Jenny is the nickname of the airplane depicted.

It was issued in 1918 - And you can see that the airplane is upside down on the stamp. Only a single sheet of 100 stamps were printed with this mistake. And they managed to get into circulation. So... we know there are only 100 of them and one will occasionally go into auction - selling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. One has sold for over one million dollars.

I have one .... but not really! This next picture is of the Inverted Jenny stamp that I own. Yup.

The post office reissued a replica of the Inverted Jenny in 2013. Instead of the 24 cent denomination this new one has a 2 dollar denomination.

And it is this reissued stamp that I have. And, it really isn't worth anything. They issued millions of these stamps! But it is still fun to have one.

And get this! The post office decided 1n 2013 they would print a single sheet of 100 with the plane right side up. It was a big marketing thing. These 2013 stamps with the airplane right side up are actually very valuable! It is called The upright Jenny. And as of the writing of this article there is a pane of six of them for sale on the Mystic Stamp company website for 49,500 dollars! Check it out here

The post office released these stamps in 2013 in several different configurations and their Scott catalog numbers are:

  • 4806 - sheet of six
  • 4806a - single stamp, perforated
  • 4806b - sheet of six
  • 4806c - single stamp imperforated
  • 4806d - sheet of six with the airplane upright!
