How to make a Hobbit Terrarium

Here's a project that is the continuation of our Hobbit Diorama project. This is a fun Terrarium project that depicts bag end. We use all kinds of different plants to create a great aesthetic scene from the movie.

At the bottom of the page you can also watch the video tutorial.

Terrarium layer of pebbles

First, start with a large glass bowl and fill the bottom with pebbles for your first layer. Pebbles are placed in the terrarium for good drainage.

Charcoal filter

Next, add a layer of horticultural charcoal about a half inch deep. This helps purify the water and prohibits mold growth. However, it is an optional step since it is not completely necessary in order to create a terraium, but it's a nice thing to have.

Moss protective layer

Now, put in a nice layer of sphagnum moss to cover the charcoal. This is a protective layer that prevents any soil from seeping through to the bottom.

soil

At this point add some soil to the terrarium. Fill it based upon the size of your bowl. However, remember that this is what the plants will be growing in so try to at least have a few inches of soil.

Place Diorama

Now, dig out the center a little bit in order to create room for the Hobbit Diorama. Make the hole deep enough so that you can cover the gold base completely. You may want to place the diorama more towards the front so you can create a sort of forest of plants in the back. However, this is something we did for aesthetic purposes and is an optional step.

Terrarium plants

Time to add some plants. For this one we use several different plants. For this project we decided to use bigger plants in back of the diorama in order to create a forest. Dig holes for all your plants and remember to remove some of the soil from the roots so that you can transplant them. Remember this is all your own and you can place the plants however you choose.

Now you have your very own Hobbit Terrarium!
