Creative Terrariums - Ideas and Themes

One of the great things about terrariums is that you can make them with a wide variety of themes. A theme will make your terrarium much more interesting. Here are some theme ideas.

  • Desert Theme - A terrarium like this is easy to maintain and looks really nice. If you make it enclosed and large enough it is perfect to put a lizard in. You place cactus and other types of desert plants and flora in the terrarium. You could also put colorful stones on top of the soil When making this type of terrarium you should pay attention to the needs of the plants. Cactus usually need a very sandy soil which you can purchase at any garden shop. Do not mix normal soil with beach sand. This sand usually has an extremely high salt content which will be toxic to your plants.
  • Medieval theme - Create a lush forestl like environment with ferns and fauna then add small figures of knights or small structures that resemble castles.
  • A scary theme - This a favorite of many terrarium builders. You use carnivorous plants in the terrarium. They have a very medieval almost Jurassic look to them and you get the bonus of being able to feed your plants.Venus Fly Traps are great for this.
  • Beach theme - A few well placed miniature palms, some shells, and a top coating of sand will make a great beach scene you can even hunt around in a craft store for some miniature furniture like a beach umbrella or beach chairs. Remember not to use real beach sand; purchase potting sand.
  • Jungle theme - Use lush ferns and lots of spanish moss or spaghnum moss. A tiny ceramic tiger or monkey would add a nice finishing touch.
  • Bonsai - A single bonzai tree with some small ferns make a great little terrarium. Add a sandy top as if it were a meditation garden then add some small oriental ornaments and you have a great themed terrarium.
  • Adding extras to your terrarium - This makes all the difference in your terrarium. You can hunt through a craft shop and find all sorts of nice accessories like cloth butterflies or small ornaments even tiny birds or dragons.
  • Adding animals to your Terrarium - This is a challenge because you not only have to care for the plants but you also have to care for the animal. But it is something well worth the challenge. Be sure the terrarium is enclosed and that there is enough room for the animal to be comfortable. Some favorites are lizards and turtles.
